Balas Budi Si Gadis Bangau
Long ago, on the island of Sumatra near the city of Palembang, there lived a childless old couple - Pak Banar and Mak Uli. One day, Banar came across an injured crane while he was on his way to fish at sea. He took in the crane and cared for it until it could fly again. Shortly after the crane left, a beautiful young lady by the name of Kinantan, showed up at their doorstep. The couple took her in and cared for her like their own daughter. Little did they expect that Kinantan was a skilled songket weaver and her skills proved to be useful when the couple fell on hard times. Pak Banar was unable to go out to sea during the monsoon season and luckily, with Kinantan's songket, they managed to sell it at the market and got some money to sustain them. Kinantan continued to weave songket for the couple but there was 1 condition: they are not allowed to peep inside her room while she was weaving. Eventually, curiosity got the better of them and they found out that Kinantan was actually the same crane that they had saved and cared for. Since they had broken the rule/condition, tearfully, the crane gave her final songket weaving to the couple, bid goodbye and flew away.
